The earth is complete and it is
good, well almost. Man needs a woman. There is some argument about what may
seem to be two creation stories that can distract from the purpose of the
stories.
First, God created everything, and
it was good. This included a day off as a day of rest, not a day to do
something else. It’s nice to know that rest wasn’t an after-thought for God but
part of our original design. The idea of keeping busy 24-7 is not part of God’s
original plan for mankind and unlike the vegetarian diet, it never did change.
Another major theme is God is seen
as making a woman a special creation. The old poem by Matthew Henry is born out
in this chapter. “Women were created
from the rib of man to be beside him, not from his head to top him, nor from
his feet to be trampled by him, but from under his arm to be protected by him,
near to his heart to be loved by him.”[1]
In the middle of the chapter, we
see God gave man free will. One simple command, don’t eat from one tree of
the many which were provided. We don’t even get the idea that the tree was
anything special. There was just a warning.
There are so many good options in
the world, why do you want to choose the bad one?

(2) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. (20) And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. (21) And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; (22) And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. (23) And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. (24) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (25) And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
